Ages 3–5

Little
Lions

Ages 3–5 · Beginner Only

Our youngest class is built around movement, play, and listening — not technique. At this age, children are learning to follow instructions, take turns, and use their bodies with coordination. Every drill is disguised as a game.

No live sparring. No pressure. Just positive movement habits, big smiles, and the foundation of body awareness that will serve them for life — in BJJ and beyond. Parents are welcome to watch every session.

Kids 6-9 BJJ class Venice CA

Ages 6–9

Juniors

Ages 6–9 · Beginner to Intermediate

The Juniors program introduces real BJJ curriculum for the first time. Students learn fundamental positions — guard, mount, side control — and basic submissions and escapes. Drilling is structured and purposeful, with games mixed in to keep energy high.

Light, controlled sparring begins in this age group. Students learn to tap, to reset, and to respect their training partners. This is where confidence and discipline start to really develop. Many students in this group see measurable improvements in focus at school within months.

Teens

Ages 10–13 · All Levels

The Teens program runs a full BJJ curriculum at an age-appropriate pace. Students learn the complete positional hierarchy, submission chains, and guard development. Live rolling is a regular part of class — with coaching and structure throughout.

Competition is available but entirely optional. Many of our teen students compete in IBJJF kids divisions and do very well — but there's no pressure. The goal is always development first. At this age, BJJ becomes a genuine practice, a fitness foundation, and a community students look forward to every week.

Why BJJ for Kids

What Children Develop

💪

Physical Fitness

BJJ develops strength, flexibility, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness. Children who train consistently develop genuine athleticism that transfers to every sport and activity.

🧠

Focus & Attention

Parents consistently report improvement in schoolwork and listening skills. BJJ demands full presence — you can't drift mentally when someone is trying to sweep you.

🛡️

Bully Defense

BJJ is widely recommended by child psychologists and educators as a healthy response to bullying. Confidence and a calm ability to handle physical pressure removes the bully's power completely.

🤝

Respect & Discipline

Bowing in, listening to instruction, tapping when you're caught — BJJ teaches respect in action, not just in theory. These habits carry into school, home, and relationships.

Confidence

There's a unique confidence that comes from knowing you can handle yourself physically. It shows in posture, in social situations, and in how children approach new challenges.

🌱

Long-Term Character

BJJ teaches children to lose gracefully, learn from failure, and keep showing up. Those are habits for life — not just the mat.

For Parents

What Parents
Need to Know

You know your child best. Our job is to create the safest, most structured, and most engaging environment possible — and to keep you informed every step of the way. Here's what to expect when your child joins Kaizen Academy.

All kids classes are membership only — no drop-in rates for children. This is intentional. Consistent attendance is what builds the confidence, habits, and skills that make BJJ genuinely valuable for your child. One-off visits don't serve them the way a real practice does.

Your child will need a kids Gi (kimono) for class. We can point you to quality options at reasonable prices — ask us when you book your free trial. For the trial itself, just bring athletic clothes.

We always encourage parents to watch class, especially in the first few weeks. Seeing the environment firsthand answers most questions and usually turns skeptical parents into BJJ's biggest advocates.

Kids BJJ FAQ

We accept kids as young as 3 years old in our Little Lions program. At that age we focus on movement, coordination, and listening rather than technique. Kids 6 and up begin learning fundamental BJJ positions, and teens 10–13 train a full curriculum.
Yes. BJJ has one of the lowest injury rates of any youth sport. For younger kids (3–5), there's no live sparring — just drills and games. Older kids learn to tap (submit) immediately, which stops every technique safely before any discomfort. Class sizes are capped at 15, so the coach can watch every child.
Yes — and the research backs this up. BJJ is widely recommended by educators and psychologists as a healthy response to bullying, not because it teaches children to fight, but because it builds genuine physical confidence. A child who knows they can handle themselves physically almost never needs to use it — because bullies can sense that confidence.
For the free trial, just athletic clothes. After joining, your child will need a kids Gi. We can recommend quality options at reasonable prices — just ask us when you book. Water bottle recommended; flip flops for walking on and off the mat.
Absolutely — and we encourage it, especially at first. Seeing the environment builds trust for both you and your child. Many parents end up training themselves after watching a few kids classes.
Yes, for the 10–13 age group (Teens). Competition is always optional — we never pressure any student to compete. For those who want it, we provide full IBJJF competition preparation including strategy, rules, and tournament-day support. Kids competing in BJJ learn how to handle nerves, perform under pressure, and win or lose with grace.
