Who We Are

About Kaizen

Kaizen Academy is a boutique Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school at 2014 Lincoln Blvd in Venice, CA. We offer beginner-friendly adult and kids BJJ classes six days a week, led by a black belt instructor every single session.

We are proudly affiliated with the 360 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu network — one of the most respected BJJ affiliation families in the country. That affiliation connects our students to a global community of practitioners who share the same values of technical excellence and personal growth.

The word kaizen (改善) is a Japanese philosophy meaning an approach to life that focuses on small, consistent improvements over time — compounding into something remarkable. That's not just our name. It's how we run every class, how we design our curriculum, and how we think about each student's development.

We don't measure success by trophies. We measure it by how much better you are than you were last month.

My Journey

My BJJ journey began in 2016 when I started training under Scott Huston at 360 BJJ. What started as curiosity quickly became a calling. The discipline, the problem-solving, the community — I was hooked almost immediately. There's something about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that gets into you. It humbles you completely, then slowly gives you back something better.

In 2019, I made the move to California, trading seasons for sunshine and finding a city that matched my energy. I continued training and competing at the highest levels I could access, earning my black belt in 2023 — a milestone that took seven years of consistent, sometimes brutal, always rewarding work on the mat. The black belt wasn't the end of anything. It was the beginning of understanding how much I still didn't know.

Kaizen Academy was born out of a simple belief: that BJJ should be accessible to everyone who wants it, regardless of their background, fitness level, or age. I've taught students from complete beginners who had never worked out in their lives, to parents training alongside their kids, to experienced competitors looking for a serious home. Every single one of them had the same first-class nerves. And every single one had the same potential.

I hold a NASM Personal Training certification and a NASM MMA Strength & Conditioning Specialist certification. These aren't just credentials on a wall — they shape how I think about athletic development for my students. Not just technique, but the physical and mental conditioning that makes great practitioners. Jiu Jitsu without physical preparation is a car without fuel.

Outside the gym, I'm a proud dad to two girls, Alana and Ashton, who my wife Jessica and I are raising here in Playa del Rey. You'll often see them at the academy — they're part of what makes Kaizen feel like a family gym, because it genuinely is one.

Coaching Philosophy

I teach BJJ the way I wish I'd learned it — with clear structure, honest feedback, and a genuine investment in each student's development. I don't believe in throwing people into the deep end and calling it the way. I believe in meeting students where they are and building from there, systematically and patiently.

Class sizes are capped at 15 students. That's intentional. It means I can actually watch every person in the room and give them real coaching feedback — not just shout corrections from across the mat. Small classes mean more reps, more attention, and more progress per hour.

The name Kaizen isn't branding. I try to apply it to my own practice every day — showing up, refining small things, staying humble enough to learn from my own students. The practitioners who thrive in BJJ aren't the toughest or most athletic. They're the ones who got comfortable with being bad at something — and kept going anyway. If that resonates, come try a class. The first one is always on us.

Muay Thai Instructor · Kaizen Academy BJJ · Venice, CA

I'm Brian — Muay Thai instructor at Kaizen Academy. I started training in 2017 and was hooked from day one. Martial arts quickly became more than a hobby; it became a foundation for growth, discipline, and continuous learning. My goal is to create classes that challenge students, build confidence, and make the learning process both effective and enjoyable.

Muay Thai Instructor
Background

My martial arts journey began in 2017 at Dragonsnake MMA in Tempe, Arizona. What started as curiosity quickly became an essential part of my life. The challenge of learning new skills, overcoming obstacles, and pushing my limits kept me coming back day after day. That passion for training led me far beyond the gym. Over the years, I've pursued competition, endurance events, and business ventures, all driven by the same desire to grow and improve. Martial arts taught me that progress rarely happens overnight. It's built through consistency, patience, and a willingness to keep showing up. In 2026, I answered the call of California and made it my new home. Joining Kaizen Academy has given me the opportunity to continue sharing the lessons martial arts has given me while helping others discover what they're capable of. As a coach, I believe creativity is one of the most important parts of learning. Every student learns differently, and every class is an opportunity to find better ways to develop skills without overwhelming the athlete. My coaching style is designed to keep students engaged, working hard, and thinking differently while creating an environment where they can make steady, meaningful progress. When I'm not coaching or training, you'll probably find me listening to reggae music, exploring a local bookstore, or diving into the metaphysics section looking for a new perspective. Learning has always been part of who I am, and that's something I bring with me onto the mats every day. I look forward to meeting you and being part of your journey at Kaizen Academy.

We train with intention. BJJ teaches you to move efficiently, conserve energy, and stay composed — on the mat and off it.

02

Inclusive Practice

Our mats welcome all bodies, ages, and experience levels. You don't need to be athletic, flexible, or tough to start — just willing.

03

Holistic Wellness

BJJ builds more than physical fitness. Students consistently report better sleep, lower stress, and sharper mental focus within weeks.

04

Expert Guidance

Every class at Kaizen Academy is led by a black belt instructor. Always. You'll have experienced eyes on your technique from day one.

05

Sustainable Growth

We train for the long game. Kaizen means small, consistent improvements over time — not quick fixes or shortcuts to a belt.

06

Community First

BJJ is humbling. We built an environment where that's celebrated, not punished. Everyone here remembers their first day on the mat.
